John Whyte, MD, PhD

Dr. Whyte is the Director of Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute and Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. He is trained in PM&R with specialization in traumatic brain injury (TBI), and holds a PhD in experimental psychology. He has received funding from the NIH, NIDRR, the Department of the Army, and several private foundations for his research.

Dr. Schwartz is Associate Director of Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI) and Research Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. She earned a PhD in Experimental Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and received post-doctoral training in Behavioral Neurology/Neuropsychology from the Johns Hopkins Medical School. Dr. Schwartz is co-founder and research director of the Moss Aphasia Center. As Co-Investigator of the NCRRN, Dr. Schwartz heads the Patient Research Registry project.

Laurel Buxbaum, PsyD

Dr. Buxbaum is Director of the Cognition and Action Laboratory at the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute and an Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. Her primary research interests are in the bidirectional links between object and action representations, and the complementary roles of representations of tasks, objects, space and the body in both action and conceptual processing. Research in her lab uses behavioral methods with healthy and brain-lesioned subjects, voxel-based lesion analyses, eye-tracking, and virtual reality.

Ruth Fink, MA, CCC-SLP, is Clinical Director of MossRehab Aphasia Center and Research Associate of Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute. As a clinical researcher specializing in aphasia rehabilitation, she has served as Co-PI and Project Director on federally funded treatment grants in the areas of sentence processing and word retrieval disorders and has also received funding from private foundations for her work in developing and investigating theoretically motivated computer-assisted applications in aphasia rehabilitation.

Tessa Hart, PhD

Dr. Hart directs the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinical Research Laboratory at MRRI and is a Research Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University. A clinical neuropsychologist with a doctorate from the University of Houston, Dr. Hart studies outcomes and treatments for TBI through the NIDRR-funded Moss TBI Model System site, of which she is PI, and additional local and multi-center projects, including an NIH-funded RO1 on anger self-management training for people with traumatic brain injury. Dr. Hart has a special interest in executive function, emotional regulation, and complex interventions, including vocational rehabilitation.

Steven Jax, PhD

Dr. Jax is an Institute Scientist at MRRI where he directs the Perceptual-Motor Control Laboratory. Dr. Jax is trained in cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. His research focuses on perceptual-motor control deficits in stroke patients.

Shailesh Kantak, PT, PhD

Dr. Kantak is the Director of the Neuroplasticity and Motor Behavior Laboratory. He is trained as a physical therapist with specialization in neurologic physical therapy and holds a PhD in Biokinesiology from the University of Southern California. He received his postdoctoral training from Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and University of Maryland Advanced Neuromotor Rehabilitation research Training (UMANRRT) fellowship. His primary research interest is to understand the brain-behavior relationship underlying motor skill learning and rehabilitation of patients with neurologic disorders. Research in his lab uses behavioral methods in conjunction with motion analyses, electromyography (EMG) and non-invasive brain stimulation techniques administered with neuronavigation system.

Junghoon Kim, PhD

Dr. Kim is Director of the Clinical Neuroimaging Laboratory at the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute and a Research Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. He earned his PhD in Experimental Psychology at University of Pennsylvania and completed fellowships at UCLA and MRRI. Dr. Kim's current research focuses on neurorehabilitation issues in traumatic brain injury. Research in his lab employs various state-of-the-art neuropsychological and neuroimaging methods.

Dan Mirman, PhD

Dr. Mirman is an Institute Scientist at MRRI where he directs the Language & Cognitive Dynamics Laboratory. His primary research interest is the mechanisms underlying comprehension and production of spoken language. Current projects are focusing on the time course of spoken word comprehension in aphasia, the structure and processing of conceptual knowledge about words and objects, and the dynamics of competition and cooperation between words that are similar to each other in sound, spelling, or meaning. Research in his lab uses behavioral, eye-tracking, cognitive neuropsychology, and computational modeling methods.

Erin Vasudevan,PhD

Dr. Vasudevan is an Institute Scientist at MRRI and directs the Motor Learning Laboratory. She earned a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Alberta and received post-doctoral training in Motor Learning and Rehabilitation from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Kennedy Krieger Institute. Her primary research interest is the mechanisms underlying motor learning in children and adults. Specifically, she is interested in how people learn new gait patterns, and how this learning can be optimized for the purposes of rehabilitation.
